In the beginning Did you know that the earliest reference to magnets dates back to more than 2,500 years ago - when magnetic lodestones were discovered by the Greeks? The word magnet actually comes from the Greek word ‘Magnetis Lithos’ meaning ‘Magnesian Stone’, a reference to Turkey, where the stones were originally discovered. However, it wasn’t till 1930 that professors Dr. Yogoro Kato and Dr. Takeshi Takei accidentally produced the first ferrite magnet at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Two decades later, mass production of ferrite began as an alternative to metallic magnets.
