Mass shootings continue to take innocent lives during pandemic

The tragic mass shooting in Indianapolis, where 8 people were killed after a former employee opened fire at a FedEx facility, has added weight to the argument for bleed control facilities being readily available in public places.

Four of the victims of the tragedy were Sikh and the shooting has shaken the Sikh community.

Officials said the mother of the 19 year old gunman, who took his own life, had warned law enforcement officials last year that he might try to attempt ‘suicide by cop.’

An F.B.I special agent confirmed the gunman had been interviewed by federal agents in April 2020 and he was put on ‘immediate detention mental health temporary hold.’

This latest tragedy sadly follows a long line of shootings that have happened during the pandemic.

The Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as one with four or more people injured or killed, not including the perpetrator, has counted 11 mass murders in 2021.

The following list offers a glimpse of the gun violence the US has already suffered this year:

Indianapolis – April 15 – Eight dead: At least 8 people killed after a gunman opened fire in a FedEx warehouse. Relatives were unable to confirm whether their loved ones were alive or dead as workers were not allowed to use cell phones at work.

Rock Hill, S.C., - April 7 – Six dead: Former N.F.L player shot and killed a doctor, the doctor’s wife and their two grandchildren inside their home, as well as two air-conditioning technicians. The gunman later killed himself, authorities confirmed.

Allen, Texas – April 3 – Four dead: Authorities confirmed two brothers killed four family members before killing themselves.

Orange, Calif. – March 31 – Four dead: Four people killed, including a 9-year-old boy, after a gunman opened fire at a real estate office.

Essex, Md. – March 28 – Four dead: A gunman killed his parents, two people at a convenience store and then himself, police said.

Boulder, Colo. – March 22 – Ten dead: Gunman inside a grocery store killed 10 people, including a police officer who was the first responder at the scene.

Atlanta – March 16 – Eight dead: Eight people, including six women of Asian descent, were killed at three spas. The attack has caused particular alarm among the Asian-American community.

Indianapolis – March 13 – Four dead: Four people killed, including a 7-year-old boy, during a shooting over a domestic problem.

Muskogee, Okla. – February 2 – Six dead: Five children and a man killed and a woman seriously injured when they were shot in their home. A brother of one of the victims was later arrested.

Indianapolis – January 24 – Five dead: Five people, including a pregnant woman, were found dead inside a home after the authorities came in contact with a juvenile male, who was suffering from gunshot wounds. He was arrested the next day.

Evanston, Ill. – January 9 – Five dead:  At least five people killed, including a 15-year-old girl, during a shooting in the Chicago area. The gunman was killed by police.
