5 reasons why your school should have bleeding control equipment

After the uncertainty faced over the past few months, the thought of returning to school is an exciting time for all children. With the unpredictable readjustment period that these youngsters now face, it is vital to be prepared and equipped for the common injuries that occur throughout the United States schools.

Several states in the US are already enacting legislation that takes into account the core principles of the Stop the Bleed program. In 2019 at least 12 states introduced or passed legislation to inform, educate and empower their pupils and teachers to become immediate responders, who can save a life in the event of a bleeding emergency. Not only does this prepare them for an attack, but mentally equips them to deal with catastrophic incidents.

In this blog, we look at the most common types of injuries, how to prepare for EMS arrival and how to educate children when the unthinkable happens.

  1. Be prepared before the Emergency Services arrive

“Every year in the United States, emergency rooms treat more than 200,000 children for playground-related injuries.

Many schools are not equipped to care for a child with serious lacerations and rely on the Emergency Services to respond in a timely fashion to the incident.

Unfortunately, a trauma victim can bleed to death in five minutes, often before even the quickest of first responders can arrive at the scene.

It is imperative that schools are prepared for an accident which requires immediate bleeding control training and supplies. TyTek Medical can assist in facilitating Stop The Bleed training, as well as obtaining Bleeding Control equipment that can be used effectively and easily to ensure the trauma victim is stable before the Emergency Services arrive.

  1. The most common injury at school

“Playground injuries are the leading cause of injury amongst school children and nearly 70% of these injuries are falls to the surfaces.”

Unfortunately, more than 12,000 people between the ages of 0 and 19 die following such incidents each year.

How can you better prepare for an accident at school?

Bleeding Control Kits for schools contain the necessary equipment to control serious bleeding and prevent further blood loss for a victim suffering a traumatic injury.

Each of the TyTek Bleeding Control kits contain an information sheet that can be followed whilst delivering life-saving care to the victim.

  1. Prevent unprecedented attacks happening at schools

In the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, killing six educators and 20 children between six and seven years old, schools across the US have invested in emergency preparedness equipment and training to prevent the loss of life in an unprecedented attack.

TyTek Medical has worked alongside the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement, supporting their mission to create safer and more loving communities through next generation social and emotional learning.

Although it’s extremely important to prevent catastrophic attacks from happening, we also need to ensure schools are educated, equipped and empowered to Stop the Bleed. In 2018 in the aftermath of another school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Dr. Peter Antevy noted during a 60 Minutes interview, that although 34 people were shot and 17 were killed, “17 kids are alive today because of quick action and quick work of those folks who put on tourniquets and chest seals.”

  1. Bleeding control kits should sit alongside first aid kits at your school

The National Education Union in the UK recommends that every school has a minimum of one qualified first aid provider with access to appropriate first aid equipment. While first aid equipment is necessary for minor accidents, first aid kits do not generally contain the supplies needed to Stop the Bleed or treat a victim with  severe bleeding.

Our Bleeding Control Stations are specifically designed to provide quick and easy access. Each wall mounted Bleeding Control Station contains eight Bleeding Control Kits and a disposable litter.

The Standard Individual kits contain:

1 Instructions For Use Card

2 Pairs of Nitrile Medical Gloves

1 Compression Bandage (6”)

2 Z-Fold Gauze

1 Pair of Piranha Trauma Shears (5.5”)

1 Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT)

1 Black Permanent Marker

Our Enhanced version (which is Texas compliant) adds an emergency blanket and chest seal in each kit.

The American College of Surgeons had developed a Bleeding Control Legislative Tool Kit to assist advocates of bleeding control training and equipment in their communities. If you are interested in advocating for bleeding control in your state, community or schools please visit the link below.

  1. Train students to become educated, equipped and empowered to stop the bleed

During a mass casualty attack or if one student has become seriously injured due to a fall, pupils may become scared, upset and unprepared to safely and effectively respond to the incident.

TyTek Medical can facilitate Bleeding Control training to schools to ensure all students are capable of responding to a casualty. Within the training our emergency preparedness experts are able to demonstrate how to use the Bleeding Control Kits to ensure students and staff can easily use the equipment.
