Are you Educated, Equipped and Empowered to Stop the Bleed?

The publicized phrase ‘Stop the Bleed’ has unintentionally become associated with catastrophic incidents or mass-casualty attacks. While the Stop the Bleed, program was a result of the Sandy Hook, Connecticut school shooting in the US, people are faced with life-threatening accidents across the globe resulting from day-to-day activities.

Worldwide, severe trauma is the cause of death for five million people annually and this is projected to surpass eight million annually by the end of the year. Hemorrhage accounts for approximately 35% of the mortality from these traumatic injuries, second only to the central nervous system (CNS) injury. (Donnley and Loyd, 2019).

In this blog, we will uncover some of the most common places people are involved in an accident that requires bleeding control care.

1. Injuries at work

“Every 7 seconds, a worker is injured on the job.” Many workplaces only have access to a first aid kit if an employee is injured, relying on the emergency services if the trauma victim obtains a serious laceration. It has been recorded by the NSC that cuts and lacerations are the third most common workplace injury in the US. However, a staggering number of workplaces are not equipped to respond and stop the bleed.

2. Automotive accidents

Did you know: On average, 90 people die each day from motor vehicle crashes on US roads, according to the latest CDC Vital Signs.

Although automotive accidents are one of the largest causes of serious injury and death, most vehicles do not contain bleeding control equipment. Storing these time-critical supplies in your vehicle could help you give out timely assistance to yourself or others before professional help arrives.

3. Injuries in the home

No matter how much we strive to make our domestic environment as safe as possible, accidents at home can still happen - even in the most conscientious of households.

We don’t realize how many hazards are around our home that could be detrimental to our children, from sharp cutlery to our staircase! Children are still vulnerable at home; all households should be prepared for an unintentional accident to take place.

Bleeding control kits give you peace of mind, allowing you to quickly respond to an accident.

4. Injuries at schools

The most common injuries at school take place in the playground, many of these are minor lacerations, however, more than 12,000 people between the ages of 0 and 19 die following such incidents each year.

Teachers are equipped with first aid training to ensure children are treated at the scene of an accident, it’s imperative school staff are also prepared to care for a student with a potentially fatal injury before the emergency services arrive at the scene.

5. Farm Injuries

Agriculture is among the most hazardous of occupations. Farmers work long hours, use heavy machinery and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Also, the majority of farms are rural and isolated, with little supervision of work and less opportunity for an injured person to obtain first aid promptly. (NASD)

To prepare for fatal injuries, farms should be equipped with the correct medical supplies, both at the workplace and on large vehicles such as tractors.

In general, basic first aid kits do not contain the supplies to stop severe bleeding such as tourniquets, trauma/compression bandages, and packing gauze. All businesses and households should be educated, equipped, and empowered to respond to a catastrophic accident.
