How to make your business more attractive…

Do you have a product dilemma? Have you considered magnetics as your solution?

You’re not alone if you have cast magnetics aside because you believe the material is difficult to source, too expensive or not fit for your product design. However, this is far from the truth, magnets are in an abundance of different products, from modern-day medical equipment to residential refrigerators.

Magnets have helped us innovate and develop trailblazing products that have become staples of modern life.

In this article, we look at some of the remarkable and unexpected ways that magnets have transformed the world around us.

1. Debit & Credit Cards

Before 1966, the famous debit card was just a piece of plastic used by the rich and famous. Ron Klein wanted to design a product that was more efficient and available to a broader audience.

“Wouldn't it be nice if I could put a little bit of intelligence in that piece of plastic?” Klein said.

In 1966, Klein recorded a patent for one of the financial industries most influential innovations, the magnetic card strip. This invention single-handedly transformed the US economy; debit and credit cards became appealing as the technology was inexpensive and appealed to the everyday consumer.

2. The Magnetic Fridge

Let us hope that you are not claustrophobic for this one…The favorable vintage refrigerator became surprisingly deadly in the 50s! Before magnetics came to save the day, refrigerators only opened from the outside, and it was extremely common for young children to climb inside and unfortunately suffocate. In 1956 the US government released a Refrigerator Safety Act to prevent the incident from happening.

Following this, many refrigerator manufacturers introduced the magnetic mechanism that allowed doors to stay closed when you wanted them to, but open from the inside with a little push. This magnetic invention truly did save lives!

3. Medical Equipment

Magnets are in a range of medical equipment such as and Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines (MRI). MRIs use powerful magnetic fields to generate a radio signal from inside the body to create a detailed picture of bones, organs and other tissue.

Raymond Vahan Damadian, an American physician, is the inventor of the first MRI. Damadian's first experiment with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) led him to first propose the MRI body scanner in 1969. This technology has been developed over the decades and is now available in every country across the globe.

4. Industrial Cranes

Can you imagine a world without city skyscrapers and high-rise buildings?

There is no denying that cranes are an important piece of industrial equipment in the construction, automotive, and manufacturing industries. The modern-day crane is powered by electromagnetics, objects made up of a soft iron core with windings of electrically conducting wire that creates a magnetic field, making it more powerful than a stand-alone magnet.

Industries rely on electromagnetics to lift heavy objects off the ground and transport them from one place to another.

5. Home Audio Speakers

The majority of households own an audio speaker, whether this is a home surround sound system, Alexa or Ear Pods. Did you know that they are all powered by magnets?

All speakers consist of a fixed magnet in a metal frame, a paper diaphragm and a wire coil. When an electric current flows through the coil the magnetic forces between the coil and the magnet make the diaphragm vibrate, the vibration then produces the music you hear.

Although we may believe this is a modern invention it was actually invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone loudspeaker, a function available in every modern-day phone.

I think it is fair to say we all come into contact with different types of magnets and without them life would be very different.
